The Northwestern Growers Guild will work within Northwestern
Ontario to establish standards of organic crop, food and livestock production
which emphasizes stewardship of the natural environment to enhance food
nutrition, soil fertility, disease control, and conservation.
Objectives
The Northwestern Growers Guild exists to promote local organic food production
throughout Northwestern Ontario, educate consumers and producers about
organic agriculture, and build alliances between organic growers in the
region. Further, the Guild offers the consumer a guarantee of a sustainable,
chemical-free production system for food purchased from Guild members.
The Guild uphold standards of organic production by providing members
with a set of guidelines aimed to protect the environmental integrity
of the area in which the food is produced, and enforcing adherence to
those guidelines through a method of peer evaluation. The Guild embraces
the philosophy of organic agriculture that aims to improve the soil from
year to year, and recognizes the inherent value in supporting diverse
populations of plants, insects and other organisms within the enterprise.
Goals
Members of the Guild strive to protect the natural environment, minimize
soil degradation and erosion, protect water resources, reduce the dependence
on off-farm inputs, optimize soil biological activity, decrease pollution,
make use of alternative energy systems when possible, and provide the
consumer with the highest quality product they can. The Guild also strives
to educate farmers and consumers alike about the ecological and social
benefits of organic agriculture.
